Om or Aum, is a sound created by humming. The sound that is created with Om while humming is considered sacred by many religions around the world. The sounds dates back to ancient times and can be found in its written form on many manuscripts within temples and monasteries across the globe. Om is a Sanskrit word meaning source or universal consciousness. The first appearance of Om is believed to be from the Upanishads text, but can also be found in other dated Hindu texts such as the Vedas. The Om sound is a sacred incantation that is often used during chanting, meditation, or when reciting advanced spiritual text. The actual sound created when chanting the word Om is believed to be the sound of creation or the sound of source.

How to chant Om
We all have our own preferences when it comes to our meditation practices, and practicing the OM chanting with meditation is no different. What we are presenting here is an outline that can be followed until you become proficient in your own style of OM chant. Feel free to use this as a simple guide for now, while adding in your likes and taking out your dislikes as time goes on…
- Begin by relaxing just as you would for a normal meditation session.
- Be sure to relax the neck and jaw muscles before you begin practicing the chant.
- The ooohhh sound originates in the belly, rises up through your vocal cords and out through the mouth.
- The mmm sound should create a reverberation feeling throughout your head, mouth, and back of your throat.
- When practiced properly, the mmm sounds should last twice as long as the ooohhh sound.
- There is a pause on the final exhalation of Om followed by a slow deep breath back into the pit of the belly where the process can be repeated once again.
- Do this for as long as you feel comfortable. It can be 2 minutes, 20 minutes, or 2 hours. Just remember to stay relaxed and let the sound flow naturally through you like the waves of the ocean. In and out, then out and back in again.

My Experience with Om
When done correctly, chanting Om during meditation has been a tremendously euphoric experience for me. When I am able to let go of all that sourounds me and delve deep into the feeling of Om I feel my omnipresent connection with source. Everyone’s experience with Om is a personal one and you may or may not experience it in the way others have. That’s okay! You are meant to experience what is right for you at the time you are experiencing it. Chanting Om is not about experiencing what others have but about creating your own enriching experience. There is no need to worry or stress, just enjoy yourself through the process. Practicing with Om this should be a fun experience that teaches you how to be a better you.
