There have been times where I have wondered… Why is it that most spiritual teachers, guru’s, and mystics have long hair as opposed to short hair? Is it to simply fit a certain style or look that has become associated with mystical teachers? Or is there some type of unseen connection to spirituality and the length of your hair? Something tells me there is a much broader connection between hair and spirituality than we may realize. Let’s take a deeper look and explore the idea behind hair and spirituality.
“I love the feeling of the fresh air on my face and the wind blowing through my hair.” Evel Knievel
A Deeper Look at the Spirituality of Hair
Hair is an extension of the nervous system and can be seen as external nerves, feelers, or antennae. When the hair is cut, sending and receiving information to and from the environment around is hampered. It is believed by many ancient cultures adept in spiritual practice that uncut hair can actually raise your energy / Kundalini life force, leading to increased vitality and intuition. In fact, it was Yogi Bhajan that taught us by cutting your hair, you lose vital energy because the body must use that energy to regrow the lost hair. When the hair remains uncut this vital energy stays within you.
Throughout history it is well known that those who were captured and made to work as slaves were forced to cut their hair as a sign that they no longer possessed their freedom. Chopping off the hair was also seen as punishment as it would deprive the individuality of those who were captured creating a uniform look among all of the enslaved.
Have you ever wondered why the military cuts the hair to very short lengths of all their soldiers? They say that it is to protect soldiers in the rare case that they are captured and tortured by means of their hair. But is this really the case? Could it be that shorter hair makes you more susceptible to being controlled. This is something to reflect upon.
“Our hair fashions might be just a trend, but if we investigate, we may find that we have been depriving ourselves of one of the most valuable sources of energy for human vitality.” -Yogi Bhajan
The Story of Sampson and Delilah
This tale can be found within the bible, in the book of Judges chapter 16. The story of Sampson and Delilah begins by introducing us to a a man from Nazarite who possessed great strength, far beyond that of any other man. Sampson possessed a profound love for a woman that went by the name of Delilah. As the story unfolds, Delilah is bribed by the chief of the Philistines to find the source of Sampson’s strength. Initially Sampson is reluctant to divulge the source of his supreme strength because of his covenant with God.
Eventually, through many attempts at persuasion, Sampson gives in to Delilah and reveals the source of his strength which comes from the length of his hair. Upon hearing this Delilah orders a servant to cut the hair of Sampson while he is sleeping. Because he no longer has his long hair and his covenant with God is broken, Sampson loses his God given strength and is returned to that of a mere mortal. Captured and broken by this betrayal Sampson calls upon God to give him strength one final time so that he may topple the palace destroying himself and all of those around him.
My Take: Long Hair and Spirituality
The hair on your head and face can also protect you from the environmental conditions around you. Your hair can help to protect you from extreme conditions such as overexposure to the sun, or harsh weather conditions such as wind, rain, or the cold. All in all, the Creator gave us hair for a purpose and it is meant to be grow naturally. We all have the option to cut our hair and style it as we please because that is our free will. I however intend to let my hair grow freely the way the Creator intended. All the best to you and yours.
On the most basic level tapping is exactly as it sounds. You take your hand and gently tap against certain areas of your body with your fingers. All of this is done while speaking positive affirmations of your choosing. On a much deeper level tapping is creating movement of the energetic meridians. Tapping is also known as EFT or emotional freedom techniques.
I don’t want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them. Oscar Wilde
How does Tapping work?
When executed properly, tapping helps to realign our energy within our meridians. When the energy is flowing properly we feel great in our natural state of being. However, when the energy is not flowing properly we feel out of balance and may incur physical illness and / or disease. Tapping assists in correcting the energy flow within our bodies, realigning us to our natural state of being. Similar to acupuncture in that you stimulate certain points of the human body with needles. By tapping we use our fingers to create a similar effect naturally. Stimulating these meridian points can greatly reduces stress in the body.
How to Perform Tapping
Our first step is to take a deep breathe all the way into the pit of our stomachs, hold for a few seconds and then breathe out. Here you are trying to gauge your current stress levels so that we can see how we feel before and after a tapping session to measure our results.
We begin by gently tapping certain areas (pressure points) within our body while speaking our affirmations. The choice of words are yours to make, the important part is to feel the emotions and choose the right affirmations that will help you become a better you over time as you are tapping. Some examples could be, “I am going to have a great day today” or something along the lines of, “I choose to love and accept myself”. A common technique when tapping is to repeat an affirmation several times as you are tapping a specific point, before moving on to the next area.
After going through the process of tapping various points and speaking your affirmations, you may want to repeat the cycle again. This is fine, just be sure to stay relaxed and let the experience flow naturally. Before you begin the cycle remember to take a deep breathe and gauge your current state of being. You can tap with two fingers, your whole hand, or both hands on opposite sides. The important thing is to do whatever feels most comfortable and natural to you while tapping the correct pressure points on your body.
Potential Benefits of Tapping
Enhances well being
Enhances state of mind
Lowers cortisol (stress hormone)
Drains energy clogs within the body
Increases energy flow
Realigns the emotional body naturally
Clears possible fears and anxiety
Motivates through positive affirmations
Helps with letting go
Assists in relaxation
Rebalance certain energies
In order to move on, you must understand why you felt what you did and why you no longer need to feel it. Mitch Albom
Tapping is a powerful tool that has been proven to work through clinical reports, research studies and more. However, it is up to you to take full responsibility for your own well being. Tapping can released suppressed emotions so please take the necessary precautions when it comes to your health and well being. You can reference some of these studies in the links below.

Om or Aum, is a sound created by humming. The sound that is created with Om while humming is considered sacred by many religions around the world. The sounds dates back to ancient times and can be found in its written form on many manuscripts within temples and monasteries across the globe. Om is a Sanskrit word meaning source or universal consciousness. The first appearance of Om is believed to be from the Upanishads text, but can also be found in other dated Hindu texts such as the Vedas. The Om sound is a sacred incantation that is often used during chanting, meditation, or when reciting advanced spiritual text. The actual sound created when chanting the word Om is believed to be the sound of creation or the sound of source.
“Om is not just a sound or vibration. It is not just a symbol. It is the entire cosmos, whatever we can see, touch, hear and feel…” Amit Ray
How to chant Om
We all have our own preferences when it comes to our meditation practices, and practicing the OM chanting with meditation is no different. What we are presenting here is an outline that can be followed until you become proficient in your own style of OM chant. Feel free to use this as a simple guide for now, while adding in your likes and taking out your dislikes as time goes on…
Begin by relaxing just as you would for a normal meditation session.
Be sure to relax the neck and jaw muscles before you begin practicing the chant.
The ooohhh sound originates in the belly, rises up through your vocal cords and out through the mouth.
The mmm sound should create a reverberation feeling throughout your head, mouth, and back of your throat.
When practiced properly, the mmm sounds should last twice as long as the ooohhh sound.
There is a pause on the final exhalation of Om followed by a slow deep breath back into the pit of the belly where the process can be repeated once again.
Do this for as long as you feel comfortable. It can be 2 minutes, 20 minutes, or 2 hours. Just remember to stay relaxed and let the sound flow naturally through you like the waves of the ocean. In and out, then out and back in again.
“You are a cosmic flower. Om chanting is the process of opening the psychic petals of that flower.” Amit Ray
My Experience with Om
When done correctly, chanting Om during meditation has been a tremendously euphoric experience for me. When I am able to let go of all that sourounds me and delve deep into the feeling of Om I feel my omnipresent connection with source. Everyone’s experience with Om is a personal one and you may or may not experience it in the way others have. That’s okay! You are meant to experience what is right for you at the time you are experiencing it. Chanting Om is not about experiencing what others have but about creating your own enriching experience. There is no need to worry or stress, just enjoy yourself through the process. Practicing with Om this should be a fun experience that teaches you how to be a better you. Om…the reverberation of source!

Developed in 1954 by John C Lilly, an isolation tank is a large pod or a small room that is both light proof and sound proof. The pod or room also known as a tank, is filled with epsom salt and warm water which creates buoyancy, allowing you to float on top of it. The water is very close to the temperature of your skin so it is relaxing and feels very comfortable. Floating on the water provides your body with the needed support while helping you to feel weightless, allowing you to relax more deeply than you normally would. The absence of light and sound also enhance your experience by giving you clarity of thought, something that can be hard to find from the over stimulation of senses in every day life. An Isolation Tank is also known as, flotation tank, sensory deprivation tank, sensory deprivation chamber, sensory deprivation flotation, or simply float therapy.
“It is nice finding that place where you can just go and relax.” Moises Arias
What to expect from an Isolation Tank
If it is your first time using an isolation tank be sure to arrive a few minutes early so that you can be given a proper orientation. This should include a breakdown of the tank, how it works, and the potential experience you will be having. To begin the flotation, you will need to undress and take a quick shower with the use of soap and shampoo before entering the tank. You can chose to float with a swim suit or naked as the flotation experience is private. Next you step inside and close the door behind you. This may be a little scary at first with no light or sound, but you will soon become acclimated to your surroundings and realize there is nothing to be afraid of as the experience is actually quiet enjoyable. Some people prefer using earbuds to prevent water from entering their ears and / or to completely shut out any potential noise occurring outside of the chamber. You float weightlessly for about an hour (longer if preferred) until you hear a knocking on the door acknowledging your float session has ended. Your finish the process by taking another shower to remove any epsom salt that may still be on your body and get dressed. You are given the option of ending the experience by drinking a cup of warm tea or water which can help to bring you fully back into your surroundings. The relaxed sensation you feel from the flotation should stay with you throughout the rest of the day, the mental benefits should last much longer.
Benefits of an Isolation Tank
There are many benefits associated with the experience of an isolation tank. Here are a few of the benefits that I have experienced from my several trips to the flotation tanks in my city.
“The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.” Sydney J. Harris
My Thoughts on Isolation Tanks
Floating has been a tremendously positive experience for me and can be for you too. Aside from all of the benefits listed above, I feel like a more complete person, ready to take on just about anything after a nice relaxing float. If I was to suggest some things for a first time floater, my recommendation would go something like this…
You will probably want to abstain from taking caffeine or alcohol the day before your float as doing so can help to enhance your flotation experience. Personally, I avoid eating breakfast that morning of a float because a heavy stomach is not the best feeling while floating in water. Instead, I choose to go out and each lunch after my flotation is complete. That’s not to say you can’t eat before a float, I just wouldn’t recommend doing so at least one hour before your session. Now, if you must eat before your float I recommend eating something light like fruit, or a small salad.
Ultimately, sensory deprivation tanks are a good way to relax and clear your mind. I recommend everyone give it a try at least once and decide for yourself if isolation tanks are right for you.

Discovered by H. W. Dove in 1839, it wasn’t until 1973 that Robert Monroe and his team introduced binural tones as a way to influence human consciousness. Binural beats are a unique form of music that uses separate tones to create a desired effect. It works like this… Through a set of stereo headphones, a tone of lets say 50 Hz is played into the left ear only. In the right ear a separate tone of lets say 60 Hz will be played at the same time. When listening to these two separate tones in each ear, a 3rd wavering tone will be created inside of your head. This wavering tone is not coming from the speakers but is in fact being created by you. The 3rd wavering sound is the binural beat and in the example given above, would be a sound of 10Hz which is the difference between the two original tones. A binural tone is a standing wave that is produced by the brain and is only possible due to binural hearing. Even after listening to these binural tones, your brain can still maintain the standing wave over a period of time.
“The greatest illusion is that mankind has limitations.” Robert A. Monroe
Hemi-Sync vs Holosync
The Hemi-sync technology was created in 1975 by Robert Monroe founder of the Monroe Institute located in Faber Virginia. Hemi-Sync stands for Hemispheric Synchronization which simply means a synchronization of the brains two hemispheres, the left side and right side of the brain. The Hemi-Sync tech is a powerful sound technology that consists of different combinations of binural beats, musical instruments, sound effects and / or verbal instructions. Each has a different effect, based upon the different programs and the way they are used. With Hemi-Sync you have the option to focus your brain to peak performance through brain synchronization, relax into a deep meditation or simply get a good restful night sleep. Today there are hundreds of different Hemi-Sync programs available to help people obtain many different states of consciousness, all available through the Monroe Institute and the Hemi-Sync website.
After many years of testing through the years of 1985 to 1989 Bill Harris and West Wait brought Holosync to the public through the Centerpoint Research Institute. Very similar to Hemisync, in that it is about hemispheric synchronization, Holosync increases the connection and function between the two sides of your brain. Holosync achieves this by using different combinations of binural beats, musical instruments, sound effects and / or verbal instructions. Holosync is said to give your nervous system stimulus in the same way a workout would for your physical body. Using Holosync can increase your mental and emotional threshold as well as your intelligence and creativity. Your brain creates new neural pathways as it adapts to the Holosync tech. More information on this technology can be found on the Centerpoint website.
Nerve cells in your brain generate electrical impulses that fluctuate in distinct patterns called brain wave patterns. These patterns include your thoughts, emotions, state of being, as well as bodily functions. There are 5 categories of brainwave patterns. Alpha, beta, delta, gamma and theta states.
Gamma (38 Hz – 42 Hz) Brainwaves are the quickest of all the brainwave states. Initially dismissed and extra brain noise, until it was discovered that Gamma waves are in fact active when in states of the higher consciousness like universal love. Gamma is above the frequency at which your neurons fire so how it is generated still remains a mystery to this day.
Beta (12 Hz – 32 Hz) Is seen as your normal waking state of consciousness, experienced during times of high mental and physical activity. Associated with concentration, arousal, alertness and engagement such as decision making and problem solving. While on the opposite end, the higher levels of beta can be associated with anxiety, disharmony, or unease.
Alpha (8 Hz – 12 Hz) As your brainwaves slow they enter an alpha state. Relaxed but alert, alpha is between the stages of being asleep and awake. The lower range of alpha is a state of deep relaxation, while the higher end of alpha is a more focused yet still a very relaxed state to be in. When you are calm but engaged, like watching a good movie at your local cinema, then you are probably in the alpha state. Alpha is most often associated with super learning.
Theta (3 Hz – 8 Hz) Waves are even slower than alpha. Trance, hypnosis, dreaming sleep and deep mediation are considered theta states. Associated with increased creativity, memory abilities, and forms of super learning. Those moments where a great idea or a flash of incite suddenly comes to you are theta states. the self sabotaging parts of the left brain are bypassed in the theta state. In the lower theta state the brain makes lots of relaxing endorphin’s that can bring mild visions or simply melt away any stress you may be experiencing.
Delta (.5 Hz – 3 Hz) The slowest brainwave pattern often associated with deep sleep. People are most often sleep while in this state but there is evidence that those highly skilled in meditation can obtain the delta state while staying awake. Healing and regeneration are stimulated in this state. And in certain delta frequencies the brain releases many highly beneficial substances, including human growth hormone which helps to fight age associated diseases and keep you younger.
As your brain slows from Beta to Alpha to Theta to Delta, the balance between the two hemispheres of your brain increases. This balanced state is called brain synchronization or hemispheric synchronization. Using your brain while in this state you begin to use whole brain thinking / functioning. This means you are now using both sides of your brain to think instead of just one side at a time as we normally do. It gives you increased creativity, learning abilities and enhances memory, helping you to become less self conscious and function on a more intuitive level. In some ways, even becoming the stuff of comic book legends. Somewhat of a super hero, with increased mental powers and abilities, tapping into remarkable potential that you never even knew existed.
“The depth of learning is in direct relation to the intensity of the experience.” Robert A. Monroe
The Many Benefits of Hemi-Sync / Holosync

Decreased hyperactivity / A.D.D.
Achieve serenity / bliss
Opening up to deeper feelings
Deepened meditative state
Enhanced perception / intuition
Uncover lost or hidden memories
Increase capacity for learning / productivity
Eliminates / decreases sleep problems
Improved mood / reduced anxiety
Increased dream memory and facilitates lucid dreaming
Support the out-of-body state / explore the non-physical realms
The most effective way to listen to Binaural Beats is through stereo headphones. Speakers work great as well if you are providing the binaural beats for a large group of people, but headphones are still the best option. This is because different sounds are sent through the left and right sides of the headphones, so with speakers there may be some overlap. Having separate speakers for each ear without interference is most beneficial and better facilitates hemispheric synchronization. If you are going to use speakers instead of headphones make sure to sit near the center of the speakers for the best results. And remember lower is usually better. You don’t need to blast the tones at full volume when you are trying to relax into different states of consciousness.
My Take on Binural Beats
Scientifically proven to work, binural beats are a fantastic option for self improvement and spiritual growth. Though they can be used anytime you prefer, I like to listen to them right after I wake up in the morning or right as I am going to sleep at night. This is because I am already in a relaxed state and more open to receive the max benefits from the program.
Remember to start slow and work your way up. Beta to alpha to theta to delta is the recommended way to go. Switching from beta to delta can be an uncomfortable experience as your brain may not be ready for that kind of leap. Much like riding a bike always start slow with the training wheels on and then work your way up. Allow your brain time it needs to build the new neural pathways you are creating. There is no need to rush as it is a process and the deeper states will be there when you are ready for them.
“Always know and remember that you are more than your physical body.” Robert A. Monroe
A final note… Even though we have discussed the many benefits of binural tones, one should be cautious when listening to and downloading these audio programs over the internet. You just don’t know how these sounds were mixed and they might even have an adverse affect on you. Unlike the Monroe Institute where all of their Hemi-Sync music has been tested and perfected over many years of trial and error. So please exercise caution when you are listening from unofficial sources.
