The Wim Hof Breathing Method

Who is Wim Hof?

Born April 20, 1959, Wim Hof is the official holder of 21 Guinness World Records! One of his most famous World Records includes the Ice Endurance feat which placed Wim shoulder deep in ice for 1 hour and 52 minutes. Through the practice of his various techniques Wim Hof has been able to stand the extreme colds of Mount Everest without a shirt, to running a marathon through the harsh heat of the Namib desert with no water. It is performing such feats under extreme conditions like these that have eared Wim the title of “The Iceman”. And by perfecting his method of breathing it is believed that you can accomplish the same.

“What I am capable of – everybody can learn.” Wim Hof

What is the Wim Hof Method?

Much like the Yogic technique of Pranayama breathing or the Tummo meditation, the Wim Hof method is a particular style of breathing that has been proven to boost your immune system and give you the ability to withstand harsh physical conditions.

“Unless you are willing to experience new things, you’ll never realize your full potential.” Wim Hof

The basic idea behind the method is controlled hyperventilation. First get into a comfortable position such as cross legged or lying down on your back… now get then ready to breath! You begin the Wim Hof method by breathing in and out deeply and at a rapid pace for a certain number of breathes. 30 plus is recommended. Once that is complete, you breathe out completely so little to no air is left in your lungs. This is held for as long a period of time as you feel comfortable. When you feel like you can not hold this any longer, you take a deep breath in filling your lungs with oxygen. Your breathe is then held for about 10 to 20 seconds before you release and repeat. At this point you have completed one full cycle of the Wim Hof breathing method. Wim recommends you do this cycle at least 3 times to get the full benefit of the practice.

“If you can learn how to use your mind, anything is possible.” Wim Hof

It is important to note that this is the very basic form of the Wim Hof method, and that Wim offers an online course over many weeks that will properly teach you the basic and advanced forms of this technique. For more information on these advanced breathing techniques you can click here. Please note I am currently not receiving any compensation for this. However I have practiced the Wim Hof Method for a while now and am a firm believer in its many benefits. I would encourage you to do the same if you feel it is right for you. I hope this information was helpful to you and wish you the absolute best in your journey. If you are already a practitioner of the Wim Hof method or have any questions on the topic, please feel free to comment below. As always… Be well family!
