Exterior Styling

Power and Performance

All versions of Ford Mustang are rear-wheel-drive. The 2009 Ford Mustang is equipped with a standard five-speed manual transmission with five-speed automatic as an option. The pony car uses a 4.0L 210Hp V6 producing 240lb-ft of torque.

On the other hand, the 2009 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is powered by a 4.6L 300Hp V8 that produces the required thrust to acquire 0 to 60mph in 5.7 seconds. But for Mustang Shelby GT500 a Tremec six-speed manual transmission is the only choice. The Ford muscle cars have 19mpg and 18mpg combined fuel economy respectively.

Safety Features

The 2009 Ford Mustang has four-wheel disc brakes and front-seat side airbags as standard safety features with optional ABS and traction control. The Shelby GT500 features Brembo brakes with ABS and traction control as standard.

Despite absence of electronic stability control all Ford Mustang models have passed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests with five stars for front and side impact protection for front seat passenger. Because all those clever fitness and cycling enthusiasts have been evolving fitness equipment every year, you now can take your favorite bike inside and keep on pedaling through the winter.  But which stationary bike stand is just the right fit for your particular situation?

They're called either stationary bike stands or stationary bike trainers, but either way they help you setup your bike inside. You'll find three basic choices when you start to consider a stationary bike stand.

You will find the most advanced, perhaps, are stationary bicycle rollers. With these, you place both your wheels atop a set of rollers. This provides a smooth and natural pedal feel, but it also requires balance and concentration.  Don't think this is just like going from a stationary bike machine to the same thing on a real bicycle.  This time you have to keep your balance as you pedal.

A step down in complexity but perhaps a step up in rigor is the bike trainer.  Cycling trainers are bike stands which offer resistance to help you get a better workout.  There are three common types of resistance: fluid resistance (the most expensive), air resistance (the least expensive), and magnetic resistance (the most common).  Each has their strengths and weaknesses so I suggest you try them out somewhere to decide what feels best for you personally.

The simplest approach you can take is to just use a basic stationary bike stand.  This basically just lets you setup your bike indoors but doesn't provide much realism or challenge.  It is, however, the cheapest and easiest to setup.

Whichever method you choose, be sure to try it out in a fitness store or department store before you plunk down your cash.  Different people prefer different setups, and sometimes they're surprised by what they prefer after they actually try pedaling on one of these stationary bike stands.

The History of the Saucony Shoe Manufacturing Company

Saucony shoes have been around for 111 years.  Founded in 1898 by four businessmen from Kutztown, Pennsylvania, the shoe company’s fortunes and merchandise followed the course of American history. The name of the company is a Native American name, which means “mouth of a creek or river”.  The Saucony Creek runs through Kutztown, Pennsylvania, and the first Saucony brick shoe factory was built along its shores.  The company has been loyal to its roots, maintaining the Saucony name (even though the company was bought out by a neighboring shoe manufacturer in 1968) and the Saucony logo, which subtly represents a river running over three boulders.  Saucony began business by manufacturing children’s shoes, and by 1910, the company was producing approximately 800 shoes a day. 

No discussion of the history of Saucony shoes would be complete without also discussing the history of a shoe store called A.R. Hyde & Sons, which bought the rights to Saucony in 1968.  A.R. Hyde & Sons was based on the shores of another river – the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  It was run by Abraham Hyde who was a Russian immigrant and a cobbler by trade.  Hyde began his business by manufacturing “carpet slippers”, which were shoes made out of scraps from old or unused carpets.  These shoes were extremely popular in the area.  In 1932, A.R. Hyde & Sons first began manufacturing what the company dubbed “pleasure skates”.  These ice skates were the first “athletic shoes” ever produced by what would become the modern day Saucony.  This line of athletic shoes expanded in 1938 to include baseball shoes, bowling shoes and roller skates. 

The owners of A.R. Hyde & Sons changed their merchandise as history changed around them.  In 1942, A.R. Hyde & Sons manufactured army boots for the soldiers in World War II, and in the 1960’s the footwear company made shoes for NASA.  That’s right, the space boots worn by the first American astronaut to walk in space were A.R. Hyde & Sons originals. 

Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, the Saucony Shoe Manufacturing Company was dedicating itself to running shoes – a dedication that continues to exist today.  Hyde eventually purchased the Saucony Company in 1968 and moved its headquarters to Cambridge.  Saucony was largely a brand for a small but serious group of runners until 1977 when coverage in a national magazine brought the company national fame.  The Saucony Company eventually moved again, this time to Lexington, Massachusetts, but it maintains its focus on high quality running shoes and meeting runners’ specific needs.

Sprint work can be a great way to add variety (for both mind and body), to your regular walks. Do the same walking routine as always, but add short sprints of about 50m (about every other letter box or some other marker), then slowly walk about 50m. This will get your heart rate up way higher than normal, which will get you even fitter and burn more fat. Plus you will continue to stimulate your body differently, which is an important part of interval training.

Interval Training:

It has been proven that your muscles and body will adjust to the same routines after a period of time and they will become less effective. Many athletes will tell you that they use interval training for consistent calorie burning, muscle toning and cardio routines. By mixing up and alternating speeds, types or repetitions of your routine, it will make your exercise routine a cardio, as well as muscle toning routine. Walking and adding sprints is the same as athletes that weight lift and then use the treadmill. It involves added muscle activity and increased cardio activity.

Sprinting Benefits:

Sprinting is a great tool for fat loss and sculpting hamstrings. It also helps burn a huge amount of calories while you are sprinting. Where normal walking or jogging burns calories for only a short time after the workout, adding sprinting can cause the metabolic rate to increase for days afterward. For this reason, it is recommended that you add sprint work to your routine at least two days a week.

Sprint Routine:

For the most effective sprint work, the 50m starting point is good for beginners and 5 sprints per session are recommended. As you progress in your routine, you can work up to 100m and 10 sprints per session for optimal training benefits. Walking at a brisk pace keeps the metabolism high, even though your activity level is lower. Once you have raised your heart rate and metabolism rate, the key is just giving it interval spurts to maintain the level.

Sprinting Form:

Arms should swing from the shoulder, relaxed and at approximately a 90 degree angle, coordinated with the action of the legs. Lean slightly forward and stay on the balls of your feet, not on your toes. The stride should not be overstretched, just let the center of gravity dictate the foot landing beneath you. If you over-stride, it will actually slow you down. On the other hand, you do not want to under-stride either, sprinting is a combination of stride length and frequency for optimal effectiveness. Professional sprinters will tell you it is better to run relaxed, rather than power sprint, for speed and distance.

Too Much Cardio Makes You Fat:

The reason sprint-work is good for your workout is that jogging, swimming and brisk walking alone is considered strictly cardio. Excessive cardio workouts release stress hormones that make you insulin resistant and leads to overeating the wrong foods. Where joggers and cyclists may appear lean, their body fat percentages are quite high compared to sprinters, who are lean and muscular with low body fat.

Sprint-Work offers Cardio Benefits:

Sprinting burns fat, increases human growth hormones and promotes weight loss and more stamina. Your cardio system is strengthened because of the short bursts, followed by longer, easy recovery times, which causes less stress on your heart than cardio workouts.

Adding Sprints to your normal walking or jogging routine will make you burn calories and fat quicker and helps you build muscle, too.

Usain Bolt is the Olympic champion and world record holder. We have previously discussed how fast he could possibly run. Tyson Gay is the reigning World Champion and recently ran the 100m in 9.75 seconds at the US Championships.

With both athletes being at the top of their game, victory may be decided by their start. Neither of them is known for their explosive or fast starts. Bolt has an incredibly long stride length and eats up ground with each step while Gay has unmatched leg speed. The start though is crucial and we have therefore decided to look at some video and examine the start.

Below is some front on video of Tyson Gay at the US Championships. We want to focus on his start.

A good start requires that the athlete sets up correctly. Here are some key factors for the set position before the start gun sounds.

  1. The hands are set up on the line and the shoulders and upper body should lean forward over the hands. Track coaches suggest an angle of about 15 degrees (The angle between the shoulders and hands and the vertical). Although we cannot see the angle at which Gay is leaning (this would need a side on view of his start), we can see that he is leaning forward and ready to explode from the blocks.
  2. The angle of the knees in the start position must allow the athlete to push away from the blocks with as much power as possible while at the same time being able to get their feet through to begin running. The optimal bend of the front knee should be around 90 degrees to provide the biggest lever to produce push off. The back leg needs to be bent less than this at about 60 degree so that it is able to still push off hard but will straighten before the front leg and have time to come through for the first step.
  3. Both legs need to push off almost simultaneously at the start of the race. The athlete cannot be sitting back on either his front or back leg at the start.

Tyson Gay sets up well and in this video he explodes from the blocks, pushing off with both legs quickly. Both legs straighten completely, with the rear leg leaving the blocks and starting to drive through before his front leg (left leg) is completely straight.

Gay also uses his arms to explode out of the blocks, as well as maintain good balance. Watch as his right arm drives backward and his left forward. This motion provides extra forward momentum, but it also ensures that as he starts he does not fall over to one side. The arms act as a counter balance to the motion of the legs. In this start his right leg will take the first step on the track and therefore his left arm needs to be forward to balance this motion.

Moving forward to that first right foot step on the track, we can see that Gay's head and chest are still down low. His arms are driving hard and fast. If you pause the video you will see them as a blur. We can also see that his first step is not too long. In fact his head, chest and hips all remain in front of his foot for this first step. This allows him to continue to stay low with his body. If he took a longer first step, it would force his chest up, which would in turn slow down his speed. His chest and head stay down for as many as 16 steps allowing him to lean forward during this start and continue to accelerate.

His start technique looks great here and although we do not know what his reaction time to the gun was, we can see that he was able to accelerate well from the start and this is why he put up such a fast time.

As I looked through more videos on Tyson Gay's start, I came across one from tttjump that suggested that Gay's knee rolls forward at the start. If you study the slow motion of the start in the video above you will see what this means. Gay's front leg (his left) moves forward and down, in fact bends a little more, just after the start and as his hands leave the ground.

The suggestion is that this extra bend of the front knee at the gun, causes a delay in his ability to get off the blocks. On closer examination we can see that his back foot is driving already (straightening) as his front knee "rolls" forward. This may be causing him to push off with less power from his back leg as he may need to slow it down, to give the right leg time to get into a position to start its push off.

From a biomechanical standpoint, this would suggest that Gay's front leg is not bent to the most optimal position to explode out of the blocks. He may be bending it a little more after the start to get more push off power. The split second it takes to bend the knee that little bit more and the small amount of back foot push off power that he may lose, could determine the outcome of the race against a phenom like Usain Bolt.

Once again from the standpoint of biomechanics, this problem could possibly be solved by simply adjusting Tyson Gays starting blocks or position slightly, allowing his front knee to set up in a more optimal position for his starting style.

Of course for this World Championships, it is too late to make any changes and Tyson Gay should provide Usain Bolt some really stiff competition when they hopefully meet in the final in Berlin.

Carb Cycling: a Diet With Lots of Treats and No Tricks!

Susan hates this time of year.

"I always lose a few pounds over the summer," the 42-year-old mother and homemaker says. "But as soon as Halloween arrives, I gain the weight back, along with a few more pounds. I start eating the kids' treats and then the holidays arrive. Every January, I am fatter, more stressed out, and more tired than the year before. Even my skin suffers!"

From trick-or-treat candy to New Year's cocktails, the next few months will be filled with culinary temptations. Is it possible to enjoy the holidays without packing on extra pounds? Dr. Roman Malkov says you can, if you follow some important guidelines. Dr. Malkov, who is renowned sports medicine specialist, has developed an eating and wellness plan based on the idea of carb cycling. This approach is very different than typical low-carb diets.

People who follow a carb cycling diet not only lose weight, they also often report an increase in lean muscles mass and higher levels of energy. This is important, because we can all use some extra energy during the hectic holidays. Dr. Malkov also says his program can make your skin look younger because the diet stimulates anabolism, which leads to fewer wrinkles. Carb cycling is not complicated and it doesn't require you to buy any special supplements. You just need to learn some basic rules of how your body metabolism works.

As teenagers, many of us could eat just about anything we wanted during the holidays without gaining a pound. Then as we got older, it became harder to keep the scale from creeping upward. What changed? Our metabolism! As we age, our production of some vital hormones begins to drop and we often begin to process carbohydrates less efficiently. Still, it's important to note everyone is genetically different. That's why your friend may be able to stuff herself with mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie and stay lean while you may only lose weight by limiting you carbohydrate consumption.

In his book, The Carb Cycling Diet, Malkov explains there are two important bodily processes that determine how you look and feel - anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism is the process fueled by anabolic hormones that allows your body to build muscle and bones.

"As younger people, we produced a lot of important anabolic growth and sex hormones," Dr. Malkov explains. "As we age, our bodies produce less of these hormones, which leads to a slowing down in metabolism, resulting in weight gain and health problems. "

Catabolism is the process by which your body burns fat. Many popular diets, including most low-carb plans, focus only on catabolism, while completely ignoring the other, beneficial part - anabolism. Therefore, Dr. Malkov claims they do not help you to stay young longer, build muscle or help your body produce more anabolic hormones.

Dr. Malkov says, "It is important to realize that while catabolism destroys fat, it also destroys bone and proteins. Proteins are very important for your health. As we age, we begin losing proteins from muscle, cartilage, and skin. This leads to a decrease in bone and muscle mass, problems with our joints, and even wrinkles. If you want to stay young longer you need to take steps to prevent protein and bone loss."

Dr. Malkov says he has helped many clients lose fat in healthy way, by kick-start their metabolism and increasing their natural production of anti-aging anabolic hormones. The first step is always to put his clients on a carb cycling diet.

Unlike other carb restriction plans that limit the number of calories and carbohydrates you can consume every day, carb cycling works on a rotating system. You alternate between lower carb days and higher carb days. According to Dr. Malkov, cycling allows you to burn fat at a faster pace during low carb days and then rebuild your carbohydrate stores on the alternating days. There are several benefits to this method of eating. Carb cycling helps prevent your metabolism from slowing down, which means you are less likely to hit the dreaded fat-loss plateau. Many people also find carb cycling easier to stick to than traditional low carb diets.

"It's not realistic to tell people that they can never have a bite of Halloween candy," says Malkov. "You simply have to be aware of the big picture when it comes to eating. If you indulge a little today, you need to counterbalance your diet tomorrow."

Carb cycling has been successfully used by many fitness models and personal trainers. Dr. Malkov has also helped members of the Russian National Athletic Team use the system in order to drop fat, build muscle, and improve their performances. Additionally, there is increasing evidence that carb cycling can provide anti-aging benefits and even prevent some diseases, such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Malkov stresses that the days you pick for your low-carb and higher carb days are up to you. For instance, if you like to take a step aerobics class on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, you might want to make those days your higher carb days so you have the energy required for your workouts. During higher carb days, Dr. Malkov recommends eating between 350 to 400 grams of carbohydrates. That's about what you probably are already eating. Keep in mind that you should focus on eating unrefined carbs from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. These carbs are packed with healthy compounds that help ward off disease and keep your body young. Limited refined carbs from sugar and processed white flour. This includes white bread, crackers, and all processed junk food.

On limited carb days, Dr. Malkov suggests not eating any foods containing sugar or white flour. That means no Halloween candy! Try to keep your carbs under 300 grams a day. He says you should never starve yourself or feel hungry, even on limited carb days. Try to eat plenty of small meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism from slowing down.

By now, you may be worried that carb cycling is complicated. Dr. Malkov says it's actually pretty easy.

"Counting carbs becomes simple once you get the hang of it," he explains. "I suggest picking up a carb counting book, like the ones used by diabetics. The small extra effort it takes to carb cycle can bring a huge payoff in terms of weight loss, increased energy and improved health."

Just remember, carb cycling is not a license to eat as many calories as you want. The only way to shed fat is to eat fewer calories than your body needs to maintain your current weight. Still, Dr. Malkov wants women like Susan to understand that losing weight alone will not provide the healthy glow we all crave. If you want to improve your appearance and boost your energy as you drop pounds, you need to increase your body's natural production of anti-aging anabolic hormones. You may find that you can produce the results you are looking for by starting a carb cycling program.

The automaker also reported that the previous month's sales almost balanced the sharp sales decline of Mazda3. MNAOs combined Canada and Mexico operations reflected brisk sales in October. Mazda Canada Inc. (MCI) reported 5,978 sales, which reveals an 8 percent increase. Consequently, Mazda Motor de Mexico, which started last October, sold 804 units with just 10 dealerships.

Mazda CX-7, production version of MXD-Crossport concept car, is one of the automaker's vehicles that made it big in the auto market. The first CX-7 was built in Hiroshima, Japan. The car is inspired by Mazda Miata and parts.

Mazda CX-7 uses Mazdaspeed6's engine and driveline. The automaker also gives the vehicle its 6-speed manual transmission. The engine power is also enhanced to give off the range from 244-hp norm to an even 300 horses to exude one mean Mazda.

Mazda is determined to make the performance of CX-7 even better by unfolding its Adrenaline version. The latter features a totally different front clip with raised hood holding 2 vents. Adrenaline's headlight clusters are also new.

The exterior of the vehicle uses color shifting Nippon yellow paint that fades to white in the light. Distinguished Brembo brakes are also used to boost the 6-speed manual transmission performance.
